For many years, the Citi Performing Arts Center has been proud to host Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater presented by the Celebrity Series of Boston at the Wang Theatre. This year, we are thrilled to welcome four more world-renowned companies to our theatres. Between now and May, the Celebrity Series will introduce Citi Shubert Theatre audiences to some of the most innovative and creative international dance beginning with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company on October 19. The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company was created in 1968 to realize the artistic vision of Lar Lubovitch, one of this country's foremost choreographers. Over the past 41 years, the company has gained a reputation as one of the world's top-ranked modern dance companies, performing in virtually every state of the US, as well more than 30 other countries. Lar Lubovitch has been cited by The New York Times as "one of the ten best choreographers in the world," and the company has been called a "national treasure" by Variety.
Looking for something new and exciting for the whole family? For 40 years, audiences of all ages have been delighted by the incredible humor, versatility and pure imagination of Mummenschanz. The celebrated Swiss performance troupe has captivated the world with its groundbreaking non-verbal theatre of movement and transformation. Mummenschanz will run December 5-9.
Continuing this global journey through dance, next in the season is the contemporary Brazilian dance company Grupo Corpo, founded by Paulo Pederneiras in 1975. Pedernieras combines multiple genres of dance, such as ballet and samba, for a uniquely Brazilian style of contemporary dance. “… an impressive fusion of ballet, samba, modern dance and what-have-you, applied to impossibly quick tempos and demanding the kind of lifts, swings and general hurling about that makes one cringe to think of the physical strain, while marveling at the dancers' skill and stamina.” – The Toronto Star
Rounding out the dance series is the Spellbound Dance Company. This is the U.S. debut tour for Spellbound Dance Company, Italy’s leading contemporary dance ensemble. Program will include Lost for Words and Downshifting by Mauro Astolfi. Performances run April 5-6.
And as always, Citi Performing Arts Center is honored to have the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater back at the Wang Theatre under the direction of Robert Battle. Citi Center is overjoyed to extend this partnership to bring the community a broader range of programming for all ages. We can’t wait to see you at one of these amazing performances!
