In the turbulent year of 1968, then Celebrity Series Executive Director Walter Pierce took a chance with a single night engagement of a dynamic, emerging, African-American dance company at Boston’s John Hancock Hall. The success of the Boston debut of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has led to a 50-year relationship between this iconic dance company and the city of Boston. Through decades of brilliant performances and educational outreach, the partnership between Celebrity Series and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has had a deep and lasting impact on the Greater Boston Community. We celebrate this anniversary as a milestone of the performing arts in our city.
50 YEARS OF AILEY
A range of activities are planned throughout the 2017-2018 season to honor the unique 50-year relationship between Celebrity Series of Boston, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the City of Boston. From a symposium on Ailey’s 50 years in Boston in the Fall, to in-school residencies in January, Revelations community workshops (in locations around the City of Boston) in February, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s return engagement at the Boch Center Wang Theatre, March 22-25, the 2017-2018 season will be an Ailey celebration!
“Unbelievable. Go see Ailey. It’s change-your-life good.”

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wang Theatre has housed the performing arts since opening in 1925, developing from a movie “cathedral” and home to vaudeville musicals and big bands, to today’s role as an impressive venue for world-class theatre, music, Broadway, and dance.
