Teaching Artist Maurice E. Parent is excited to begin a six week residency at the Ellis Elementary School in Roxbury. Here are Maurice's plans for the residency:
I am overjoyed to be working with the Ellis School fourth grade class through the Target Arts Residency Program and especially excited to structure the class around the upcoming production of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. This production seems to be a new, inventive and vibrant retelling of the classic story so many of us know and love. The emphasis on creating an entire world for the audience to discover and explore with Peter, Wendy and the other children seems perfect for an artist residency program and I am honored to be involved. Over the next six weeks we will use movement exercises, theatre games, creative storytelling and other tools to invite the students to use their imaginations to create their own world. By introducing various themes of the Peter Pan story to the students, such as exploration, discovery, adventure and bravery, students will have the opportunity to internalize these themes and live out their meanings. We will create a safe place for students to explore their imaginations, and through the joy of performance will feel empowered to work to make all of their dreams a reality.
This program is funded by the Target Corporation and is also taking place at the Winthrop Elementary School in Dorchester.
