City Spotlights Teen Leadership Program 2020 Has Been Cancelled

Dear Boch Center Friends

It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing that we are canceling the City Spotlights Summer Leadership Program for the upcoming summer.  This difficult decision was not made lightly.  First and foremost, we are concerned with the health and well-being our teens and staff, and a successful program requires us to be interviewing and auditioning students now and throughout the spring – which simply is not possible.

Secondly, the coronavirus has also had a severe financial impact on the Boch Center, as it has organizations across the city and country that rely on audience-generated income. We have had to close our doors for the immediate future to ensure the health and safety of our staff, patrons and program participants. This has meant not only shows and events, but also canceling education and outreach programs through the summer. Without shows and events, we have no revenue, which has led to immediate and significant organization-wide layoffs, a drastic measure designed to weather these difficult times and eventually regain financial sustainability when the doors can reopen, hopefully later this spring or early summer.

Finally, the success of City Spotlights is based on a program design that embodies intense collaboration between 60+ teens and 20+ staff and extensive work in the community in large-group settings.  While it is too soon to know what acceptable and reasonable recommendations will be for group settings by this summer, our best guess is that either government restrictions or common sense will dictate that such close contact will still have to be limited.  Even if the restrictions were lifted in the relative near-term, our staff reductions make it impossible to implement the program this summer.

Making this decision has been wrenching for us as we were already gearing up for this year’s program.  Despite this, we plan to be back bigger and better than ever for City Spotlights Summer 2021. We appreciate your support during this difficult time and we promise to keep you updated.

Thank you for understanding and be well.

The City Spotlights Teen Leadership Programs empower youth to become leaders in school, at home, and in their communities using their creative voices. The leadership, community, and career development training that these programs provide creates a foundation for Teen Leaders to grow into adults who will champion change, drive innovation, and ensure our community’s long term vitality.

In October 2019, we celebrated #ArtsMatterDay in Washington, DC, where our President & CEO Joe Spaulding and City Spotlights Teen Leadership alum Deniece Woodard gave presentations on our beloved City Spotlights Teen Leadership Programs at the National Council on the Arts Public Meeting.
