City Spotlights Staff Blog | Week 3 | Miranda Lawson

This past week, I had the joy of choreographing a flashmob for our Teen Leaders, with contributions from my teaching assistant, Saraphym. Inspired by the theme the teens chose for this summer, racism, we selected music that celebrates difference, individuality, and being true to yourself. In just one week, the teens learned, rehearsed, and polished the choreography, and it was so impressive to watch them support one another throughout the process. They asked thoughtful questions, encouraged each other, and grew more confident every day. One of my favorite things to witness was watching the teens come out of their shells, especially those who don't necessarily consider themselves "movers." While some were hesitant at the beginning, by flashmob day they were moving with confidence and hardly had to think about the choreography anymore. 

Flashmob day was truly inspiring. Despite the heat, the teens powered through, walking all around the city and performing the flashmob around ten times. Each performance brought something new, and their energy and commitment never wavered. To me, there is something powerful about joy as a form of resistance and about choosing to celebrate our differences, take up space, and move through the world together. I am so proud of these teens and all they accomplished in just one week, and I can't wait to see them bring this choreography back to the stage for their final showcase on August 12!
